My first rice cooker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This was my first rice cooker. I am a bread baker by nature and was interested with the double function. I could not tell you how excited I was when I opened up my first batch of rice and it came out perfect. It is easy to use, easy to clean and takes up so little room. I even like the retractable cord. A great buy!
great rice cooker
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have only used it a few times – but I really like it. At first the rice was just a bit dry, but I added two tablespoons more water than usual and it came out just right.
I am using plain, bulk, Indian rice, long grained, no-rinse rice. I IGNORE the marks inside the pot… I just add twice the water as I do rice (by volume), plus 2 tablespoons water, and it
is fine. I used the plastic measuring cup that came with it to measure rice and water. I used my regular kitchen tablespoon measure to add the 2 extra doses of water.
I haven’t tried the other functions, so I can’t comment on them – it bakes bread too, but I haven’t done it.
It makes much better rice than I have been able to do on the cookstove in a pot! If you can afford it, buy it, as it makes cooking easier.
Fantastic – one of the best purchases I’ve ever made
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this rice cooker. It’s solid, petite and easy to clean.
The bread it makes is delicious and the rice is just fine.
Try slicing pitted olives and putting it in the bread recipe (I prefer Moroccan oil-cured olives myself). Fantastic.
A+.
Am I doing something wrong?
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I just bought this a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve tried cooking jasmine rice two times. Both times, the rice came out pasty and unpleasant. What’s wrong here? If I’m doing something wrong, I’d appreciate the advice and I’ll update my rating if that is possible.
I love rice, but I love breathing, too.
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
After reading all the great reviews here I was looking forward to this rice cooker, which I chose because it has a titanium bowl rather than an aluminum or teflon-coated one, hoping to avoid the toxic properties of those.
I washed the parts thoroughly as I usually do with new cookware. Yet I can’t believe how toxic the fumes were that emerged from this thing. It’s hours later and I can still taste them and feel them in my lungs. Thinking I must be nuts, since I saw no mention of this in the reviews, I did a Google key-word search and found several Amazon reviewers of the 10-cup model of this machine who had complained of the same thing.
It cooked a nice batch of rice, to be sure, and maybe I’m among a few who are hyper-sensitive to such things, but there’s no denying the odor, which consisted of plastic and something unknown.
It’s really too bad, as this machine has everything else going for it. I’ll give it two stars because it cooks well, and maybe others can live with this “by-product”, but I wouldn’t say that I recommend it.
Great rice!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I am a big rice eater. I like to mix rice with most of my meals. It was always a pain to cook the rice as I had to keep checking on the progress so as not to scorch the rice . I have only had this cooker for a week (the reason for the 4 star rating). So far this is a dream come true! It is so easy to put everything in the cooker and let it do the rest. It really is idiot proof. The removable inside bowl (which is very sturdy and non-stick) has all the correct levels of water to add for each type of rice. Even the little measuring cup is just right. The different kinds of rice I have tried in my one week testing have all cooked so much better than I was able to cook on the stove. It is a little pricey for occasional rice preparation but for the people like me that always likes to have rice on hand, it is great! I would absolutely recommend this product. (I have not tried the bread baking capability yet and probably will not).
perfect little rice cooker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After five years of dealing with a cheap rice cooker that left 20% of the rice burnt and stuck on the bottom, which made it hell to clean, I splurged on getting this Sanyo unit. I’ve made both white rice and brown rice with it. 99% of the rice is cooked perfectly. The non-stick bowl makes it a breeze to clean. And I like the “13 minute warning” feature: the rice cooker lets you know when it is 13 minutes from completion, and it counts down the minutes.
Apparently this little machine also bakes bread. However it is NOT a bread maker. You have to prepare the dough separately and then the Sanyo bakes it. This is probably practical for those who don’t mind kneading dough, or buy frozen dough, and want small loaves of bread. I have not test the bread baking feature.
Bottom line: you get what you pay for. This rice cooker really rocks.

I thought it was going to be Huge. But the size is no bigger than a biker helmet. The Retracable cord is a plus. No need to roll it up or have them loose on the counter. I comes with a asian Spatual (like big flat spoon with dimpes), Measuring cup (im guessing 1 cup not sure dont use it i usualy use my other measuring cup i already own), and the manual (not sure if all the will come with it. but a cook book by Martin Yan’s). Still have not use the Bread Mode. but the rest are okay. if the light go out it has a Built in Lithium Battery. So you dont have to to set the clock each time you move the cooker, have a black out, or when u have to use the outlet for another appliance. But you can not use the cooking when its not plugged in. The Manual it self has 10 Recipe’s and tips. It might just be me. but i found the measuring instruction a little hard. 1st time rice cooker user here
Very Clean Rice Cooker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My old rice cooker splattered bubbling liquid onto the counter and, over time, was very messy. But this rice cooker is extremely clean, not even a drop touches the counter. It makes perfect rice and keeps it warm and ready to eat all day. I only have two small reservations which are so small that the cooker still gets a 5-star rating:
1. The measurements are for cooked rice, not raw rice. You have to use the special measuring cup to measure out the proper amount of rice. If you put in 1 cup of raw rice and fill the water level to the 1-cup mark the cooked rice will be very dry. It would be more logical to have all measurements pertaining to raw rice because that’s what you’re measuring.
2. You can’t replace the internal watch battery. You could access it by unscrewing the two screws that hold in the silver front plate and then unscrew the bottom base. But the watch battery seems to be welded or riveted into the battery holder. I guess that’s okay. When the battery goes dead in a few years it’ll probably be time to buy a new rice cooker anyway.
I love my rice cooker! The cooked rice is so good that sometimes I’ll just make rice and eat it plain with just a little soy sauce.
Excellent Rice cooker better than my Zojirushi
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
When my daughter took my Zojirushi rice cooker away to college I was hesitant to replace it with anything less than another Zojirushi. I have been pleasantly surprised to find the I now prefer my Sanyo cooker more than the Zojirushi. It cleans up easier and has a much thicker cooking pan. Rice comes out perfect every time.
A Sleek, Compact, and Highly Functional RCooker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
It cooks rice perfectly, and keeps warm quite well. The rice, depending on the grain, does get a little too hard above 4 or 5 hours of the “keep warm” function, and inedibly so after 8 hours. When this happens, I just add a little water and press the cook button again. It will rehydrate the rice quickly (much faster than having to cook the rice from scratch) and automatically switch to the warm function.
I cook rice almost daily, and find that the cooking time and quality is above average. The interface is very easy to use, and does much to enhance the functionality and design of the machine.
I’ve had the cooker for a month now, and it’s still working as new.
Others have noted that it doesn’t come with a rice paddle holder, which may be a hassle to some, but doesn’t bother me in the slightest. The plastic paddle is textured such that the rice rarely hangs onto it. The paddle then can then be left directly on the countertop without leaving bits of gunky rice behind.
As a student, I have little time to prepare meals. I find that this rice cooker makes delicious meals in no time at all – like a pressure or slow cooker. I have also used it to make curried rice with vegetables and chicken. Just through it all in and let it cook.
I was going to go for the zojirushi 3.5 as this is the one my parents own and suggested, but I found this one cheaper and more good looking. And the rice is just as good! I would highly recommend this product to anyone choosing between these two models.
Below-average Japanese rice cooker
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Pros: Small footprint, proper capacity for two people, quick cooking function for those times where you’re in a hurry.
Cons:
It does not store rice for more than 8-12 hours without the rice getting yellowed. We had a huge, ancient, dented, simple Zojirushi before getting the Sanyo that could hold the rice for at least two days before it yellowed. With the Sanyo, you’d better refrigerate any leftovers immediately.
After a year, the Sanyo fails to work. The last pot was a horrific rice paste with dry grains on the surface.
Overall:
It has a lot of software bells and whistles that do not help it make proper rice and apparently detract from that core ability. But hey, I like to use it to make rice on a daily basis, so if you want to use it to cook frozen bread dough or non-sticky rice with olive oil, go ahead and buy into the reviews here.
First and best rice cooker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Had this product for well over 4 months now, and am absolutely in love with it!
Was worried at first if it was gonna be big enough to feed My boyfriend and I. It is the perfect size to make rice up to 5 people! (and that’s A LOT of rice)
Haven’t made bread with it yet…but did make some sushi rice, which was decent. I make up to 3 cups of rice and keep the leftovers for next day’s lunch. It’s very cute in my all brushed stainless steel/black kitchen! My aunt thought that it was a boom box! Sanyo seems to have a great reputation among rice cookers as well!
The only thing I wish, is that it would be nifty to have a rice spoon holder on it. Oh well..
Oh, got this thing at an asian appliance store for way cheaper, so if you know of any, definitely go there so you can save $$. Hope this review helped!
Great performer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This machine does a wonderful job. We only use it to cook rice, but the rice comes out perfectly done and moist. I can certainly recommend it. However, when it says 3 1/2 cups, they do mean COOKED. So, if you are feeding more than 2-3 people, you might want to consider one of higher capacity.
Excellent rice and oatmeal maker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We area really enjoying making rice and oatmeat in our new Sanyo cooker. Excellent product- great results.
I liked it so much, I bought the company
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought an earlier version of this rice cooker a couple of years ago and have been delighted with it. Based on my recommendation, two friends have bought them. And I myself just bought a third one (the new version) as a present for another friend. Nothing to add to the positive comments from others in this forum. We haven’t checked out the bread-making capability yet, but the new one makes rice and steel-cut oatmeal just as well as the old one. My one small complaint is that it is difficult to clean next to the hinge. But that’s minor, compared to the cooker’s overall quality and convenience.
For what it’s worth, my favorite everyday rice by far is Kokuho Rose rice, which cooks perfectly in the Sanyo. You can buy the rice at any Asian food store, and at many supermarkets that have a large “international food” section.
Rice is nice, but Bread is Best!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this because I thought it would look pretty on our black granite counter. We eat rice all the time with all sorts of dishes from stir-fry and teriyaki to Chicken & Broccoli casserole and Beef Stroganoff and the ricee cooker ends up getting left out on the counter *all* the time. I got tired of looking at that ugly old rice cooker we had that clashed with our recently remodeled, sleek, new kitchen. (I know, I am so kitchen-vain!)
Woo baby!! Now I am making bread, from scratch- every single night before I go to bed(or setting my alarm really early) because my family *loves* the bread this thing makes!! It’s amazing really!
I make a loaf and it is gone before the day is over, guaranteed- it is so yummy and chewy. The crust is just crusty-perfect on the outside and the inside is soft and chewy. The kids love it for breakfast instead of toast- just straight out of the rice cooker with a little butter and homemade strawberry jam. My husband makes himself ham and cheese panini sandwiches which are the best ever with slices of the stuff.
So, the recipe book came with one recipe and I have played around and modified it slightly and ended up with the following which seems to be a hit with the whole family:
In my food processor I mix together
*2 cups of white flour and
*a package of quick-acting yeast- (I prefer quick-acting but have also used red star yeast that I get in a big package from a large club store but if you use regular yeast you should mix with a little of the scalded milk below that has been cooled to 90-110 degrees before adding at the end.)
Meanwhile scald 1 Cup of Milk (do this in a large pan because milk will bubble up really quickly and you’ll have a mess on your stove if you aren’t super vigilant)
Remove the milk from heat once it starts bubbling.
Add 1 Tbs vegetable oil and 1/2 C Honey and a tsp of Salt, whisk it up well and let cool to 120-130 degrees for quick-acting yeast(again, if you use regular yeast here is where you would mix with scalded milk mixture cooled to 90-110 degrees which you can proof– let sit for 5-10 minutes or so and watch for the bubbles. Remember with yeast bubbles=no trouble, no bubbles=trouble.)
Throw it all in the food processor and process until it turns into a ball (use the dough blade attachment– its the plastic thing-a-ma-bob without a real cutting blade). If it doesn’t ball up right away, continue to process and slowly add a little flour until it does. It should eventually be easy to pick up out of the food processor and play with.
Play with the dough for a while. This is technically called kneading. I like to make dinosaurs and then squash them together like they are fighting. When you’ve had enough play time, pat it into a ball and throw that baby in your rice cooker. Select bread mode. It will beep after 40 minutes at which point you can/should punch it down if you did it right and they yeast thing worked properly. It will beep again after another 40 minutes and then you flip the lo9af over to brown on the other side for the remaining 10 minutes.
The awesome thing about this is even if the yeast doesn’t do it’s thing, the bread is dense but still yummy as can be because it is nice and steamy in there. Yum!
Try it, you’ll love it!!
Oh, and it makes great rice… AND you can make bread pudding… but that’s all in the manual…so, uh, read the manual after you buy this.
Oh, and one last thing… it looks great sitting out on my counter!
Perfect Rice
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I own two other rice cookers and this is the best and my favorite. I can not wait to make bread in it! It is a small rice cooker that is perfect for a small family.
Adding a bit more detail as of May 25, 2009 – I really can not say enough about this rice cooker. I use it on a daily basis to make jasmine rice. My jasmine rice comes out perfect on the quick cycle. Try adding a little bit of olive oil in with the rice before it begins boiling. Not too much. I have found just a little bit of olive oil gives it a nice sheen and keeps it from gumming up and getting too sticky. Of course, sometimes sticky is good. Especially when making Korean BBQ. Yum!
Fantastic Rice!

I never even heard of Rice Cookers until a couple of months ago…..
Then I came across the Sanyo ECJ-S35S 3.5 cup Rice Cooker.
Now it’s like: how did I ever live without one?
The 3.5 (Japanese) cup capacity is perfect for singles or couples. It’s cute, easy to clean, has a convenient handle and retractable cord, has settings for brown rice and bread baking and most importantly of all…..
It makes Perfect Rice! Every time. As good as or better than a Sushi Bar or Chinese Restaurant.
Brown Rice from the health food store or white Sushi Rice from Jewel comes out perfectly cooked every single time. It has a “keep warm” function that keeps the rice at a perfect serving temperature for hours. I let it sit for 10 hours once and the rice was still near perfect.
Cleaning is a breeze as rice does not stick to the titanium coated pot and the inner lid pops off in an instant for easy cleaning. The included accessories are just a 1 Japanese Cup measuring cup (about 7/8 USA cup), a specially designed Spatula for scooping out the rice and a small cookbook.
The only things that aren’t absolutely perfect about this Rice Cooker is that the solid plastic feet allow it to slide backwards when you push the buttons on the front and the “End of Cooking” chime is on the quiet side.
Otherwise this is about the best kitchen appliance ever. If you like rice, you just gotta get one right now! (unless you need a bigger model)
Sanyo ECJ-S35S 3-1/2 Cup Rice Cooker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this rice cooker. It’s easy to use, and rice stays fresh and warm for hours. Now, I can eat freshly cooked rice any time I want to. Since I purchased it a month ago, I have been practically eating rice 3 times a day (I am an Aisan)without gaining weight (like I would do with American food). Yes, I am very happy with this rice cooker.
Great rice cooker from Sanyo

I have not baked bread as of yet, but the rice cooker function works great, much better than the $25 machine it replaced. I like the quality of this unit because you can tell it is well built unlike the others
back to basics
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This little cooker will change your life. Quite a claim, I know. Consider this: No more stirring, burned rice, soaking burned rice out of a pan, or scrubbing. Experiment with grains like barley and quinoa (keen-wah). Cook with broth instead of water. Come home to wonderful aromas and warm comfort food; make soups, stews, tapioca pudding, and steel cut oatmeal with maple syrup and sliced apples. When you’re feeling punk, curl up in your flannel robe and eat porridge. Pour thick cream on it if you want. Treat yourself gently in these rocky times. Honor the small animal who lives within you; he has been buffeted by forces beyond his control. This too shall pass. I have no experience with the Zojirushi product, but I can’t imagine anything better than this cooker. That it doesn’t have a little holder for the paddle doesn’t not justify Zojirushi’s higher price. The heavy bowl is substantial and is truly non-stick.
Great product
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
When you make sushi rice use a little less than the amount of water they specify for white rice. Too much water makes soggy rice, and too little water makes dry, crunchy rice. If you get the water level down the results are excellent; the taste is much, much better than a cheap rice cooker. Great non-stick bowl. I love the pre-soak function. This is definitely worth the investment.
So far, really impressed!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
So, far, this is a great cooker! I can do rice, quinoa, and even dried beans! I haven’t tried bread yet, but the manual says I can make it, too! It’s very useful. It is a great mid-range model, and a good size for a 2-person household.
Makes great rice and bread!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
When I saw it had a bread baking function, I was curious. I didn’t expect a whole lot but I figured if the bread baking isn’t great, I’d always have an oven anyway. So I took the chance.
I just used frozen bread dough (the one with 3 loaves in a bag). 1 loaf was a bit too big so I pinched off the end to make it smaller.
after 90 minutes I opened the lid it was all the way to the top. I then flip it over to brown the other side. Now the instruction says after 40 minutes you have to punch it down. Well, I didn’t because I didn’t hear the buzzer. But since it baked fine, I don’t even bother to punch it down. It bakes fine without doing so. I used Pizza dough. What’s great is that for a quick loaf, it won’t heat up the whole kitchen. It doesn’t use unnecessary eletricity(or gas) because you don’t have to turn on the big oven. When we decide to have Italian, I just pop one piece of thawed dough. By the time the dinner is ready, bread is done. It doesn’t produce dark crust, instead, it comes out with very light crust. Inside is so soft like steamed bun. It is so yummy. I also tried sweet roll dough with cinnamon, currant and sugar. It was great, too. I’m sure you can get really creative.
And by the way, it also cooks great rice, too. I used to own Zojirushi and I believe Sanyo cooks better rice than that. Not that Zojirushi is bad, it was an older model. This rice cooker’s inner bowl is much thicker so that might be why….
Anyway, I am so glad I bought this.
Great purchase

I am extremely pleased with my purchase of this Sanyo after researching different micom rice cookers to replace an on/off model. So far I’ve made brown rice, several varieties of white rice, steel-cut oats (porridge cycle), and bibimbap. Everything comes out great and the cooker is easy to clean and is attractive-looking with a small footprint. I haven’t tried bread-baking yet and would like to hear from someone who has.
Perfect Kitchen Device
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I received this product as a gift and it has been one of the most useful devices I have ever used in the kitchen. Because of how easy cooking rice in it is, I can make half a cup of rice for a snack that isn’t terrible for me like chips or other kinds of processed packaged food. Even if you make the kind of rice that comes from a box, the machine makes it easy and makes perfect rice every time.
I strongly suggest adding one of these to your kitchen devices.
Good Rice Cooker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this rice cooker for about a month. In that time I’ve used it 8-10 times. So far the quality of this product is very good — I’ve had no problems at all. It has a solid and well built feel to it.
This appliance is very easy to use. Unless you’re programming it for a later start, you simply pour in the appropriate amounts of rice and water, select the kind of rice from the menu button, and press the start button. That’s it. I usually prepare white Jasmine rice, and cook time is roughly 45 minutes. I used to be able to cook this rice on the stove top in roughly 25 minutes, so at first I was a bit concerned about the longer cook time. However, it’s turned out to work just fine. The value of a rice cooker like this Sanyo is that you can put in the rice & water, turn it on and walk away. When preparing on the stove top, I couldn’t leave it unattended. So now when I come home from work, I can get the rice started and then go walk the dogs or begin prepping the rest of the meal. It’s really convenient. The keep warm function is also helpful. If I’m not done with the other elements of the meal, it automatically switches into the keep warm mode until I’m ready.
The quality and taste of the rice is excellent. While I was happy with the rice I prepared on the stove, I think this is better. Clean up is very easy. It is truly a non-stick pot. I simply wash the removable inner pot and inner lid in warm sudsy water and wipe down the rice cooker. It’s really easy and quick.
I would recommend this to anyone who is looking at a rice cooker. This model (ECJ-S35S) can cook up to 3-1/2 “cups” of uncooked rice, which is plenty for my wife and me. If you have a bigger family, you may want to consider a larger capacity model — especially since the price is not too much different.
an excellent rice cooker

Sanyo Rice Cooker

This is our second Sanyo rice cooker and we love it!!! If you want a very very good Japanese style rice cooker, this is the one for you!! You can set the timer for when you want the rice to be done and it is! Easy cleaning, easy use, can’t ask for more!
