  1. Please believe the bad reviews!

After my first bread machine kicked it after 15 years of frequent (and successful) use, it was time to buy a new one. Even with the bad reviews, I still decided to buy this bread machine because I mostly use a machine to make pizza dough weekly. We made a batch of dough using the recipe in the manual, and it wasn’t very good. I will try my tried and true recipe and see if that fares any better. We decided to make the herb bread recipe in the booklet because our family loves herb bread. Guess what happened? The bread fell in the middle! All ingredients are new and stored properly. Then I tried to make herb bread with my tried and true recipe. Guess what? Correct – the middle fell. It seems like this machine has a paddle that doesn’t function properly for the shape of the pan. If I don’t get good results using my regular pizza dough recipe, I am definitely returning this machine! What a waste of money!

  2. Slow Bread Maker

The bread machine does a great job, but it takes about 4 hours to make most bread recipes in the book. Lots of planning ahead if you want bread with dinner!!

  3. Awesome

The Oster 5838 ExpressBake Breadmaker is all that I had hoped for and then some. I dallied for months trying to select the best breadmaker for me to buy…. review after review after review. I finally said enough already and bought the 5838… and am I happy.

It’s my first breadmaker so I have nothing to compare it to. But it makes great, no, make that GREAT bread. It’s easy, operates well, has a decent-sized footprint and cleans up in a breeze. I’ve tried 6 of the recipes that came with the machine (Italian herb being my fave) as well as recipes from bread books… and enjoyed every one. Being single, I even tried a 1lb recipe… it came out perfect. I looked at models much more expensive than the 5838, and I was a little apprehensive about buying a machine that costs so much less than the bigger-named models. But dollar for dollar, it has to be the best value on the market!

I highly recommend the 5838… no complaints whatsoever!!

  4. bread in less than 1 hour

I bought this breadmaker as a replacement for the same one that has lasted about 7+ years. This one is even better. The bread turns out wonderfully even on the express bake settings. My children even enjoy making the bread.

  5. So far, so good

I’ve had my machine for a little over a month. First time using a breadmaker – a bit of a learning curve. Now on my 6th loaf and just starting to get tasty loaves. Important to pay attention to the recommendations (order of ingredients, nothing cold, etc.). Other sites online tips and recipes are also helpful. Only downside to machine is the bread pan is difficult to remove, I always feel like I’m going to break it. Overall, I love making my own bread!
